GRAHAM MARCHANT
Graham Marchant
Graham Marchant’s new exhibition to Plant a Garden Is to Believe in Tomorrow continues his lifelong exploration of gardens, interiors, light, and the quiet dialogue between inner and outer worlds. Based in the Blue Mountains since relocating from England in 1981, Marchant has built a distinguished career across painting, watercolour and printmaking, informed by rigorous academic training and decades of teaching and international practice. His works transform windows, flowers, fabrics and still-life arrangements into contemplative spaces where time seems to slow, and where seeing becomes an act of reflection.
For Marchant, the garden is never merely a physical site. It is a psychological and emotional refuge, a place where order, care and attention counterbalance uncertainty. From his early Garden Series to later exhibitions such as Inside Gardens, Outside Rooms and Seasonal Nocturnes, his paintings have consistently returned to themes of light filtering through space, of growth observed with patience, and of nature held in quiet dialogue with domestic life.
The title of this exhibition suggests both an action and a belief: to plant is to trust in what has not yet appeared. In an era defined by acceleration and instability, Marchant’s work offers a gentle but profound affirmation—that attentiveness, cultivation and faith in natural cycles are themselves gestures of hope. Each image becomes a small act of confidence in renewal, reminding us that to care for the present is, ultimately, to believe in tomorrow.
